Maybe living in a rather cloistered oligarchic city state, with a tradition of assumed infallibility rubs off on you? But the gall and the sheer insensitivity of this…this..prick of a Pope has me riled up.
Like an abusive husband who expects a “sorry” will make up for years of domestic violence, the pope after some minor handwringing has cast aside the abuse scandal and the justifiable media furore with defiance.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
Pope Benedict began Holy Week by suggesting in his Palm Sunday address that the Catholic Church would ”not be intimidated” by the sex scandals in which it had become embroiled.
In a sign the Vatican continues to insist the abuse claims are part of a conspiracy, the Pope, 82, said: ”From God comes the courage not to be intimidated by petty gossip.”
So all of a sudden, the abuse that he’s just apologised for is part of a conspiracy to intimidate the church – it’s petty gossip.
Even at a stretch I can’t compare the pain, shame and guilt caused by the rape and buggery of small children to the inconvenience of bad press. The pope and his organisation have enabled paedophilia, enabled it and covered it up.
Learned helplessness
But like victims of domestic violence the faithful continue(at least in some countries) to return and listen to the man. Thousands of Catholics applauded him after this address.
Ignore the scandals, the church still loves you.
Yes we are sorry but it’s not all bad
You need to return to church or you won’t make it to heaven
A collective restraining order
The pope is a head of state as well as a religious leader, perhaps we should expel ambassadors and rescind concordats with what is essentially a criminal syndicate intent on taking taxpayers money, and abusing our children.

Every time I'm tempted to feel sympathetic to the Catholic church, something like this comes out. Of course what can you expect of a church that's still apologizing for Pope Pius XII and his Nazi-loving cadre.
Petty gossip
His compassion level is zero, and his PR sense is equally low. What really astonishes me is that every time I think he can't possibly say anything stupider than the last stupid thing he said, he manages to say something stupider than the last stupid thing he said. His stupidity is brilliantly stupid.
I'd like to think this scandal would bring about a reform one that involves removing the special status afforded the catholic church through concordats – but I have my doubts.
Yea, I was thinking about that earlier today, Sean, but I suspect that our sun will go cold and die before any government touches that idea. The Catholic Church has too much power over politics in Western countries for that to ever happen. I'm deeply, deeply disturbed by the scandals currently plaguing Catholicism and Scientology. Last night CNN had on William Donahue, a prominent Catholic activist, who blamed gays and the press for the current abuse scandal. I've never been so revolted in my life. Not that Protestants are doing much better. I'm not looking forward to Hillsong cult INC. moving to New York, as they recently announced.
On the bright side, it has been reported that almost a third of US Catholics have departed the flock in the past 30 years. What goes around, comes around.
