Top 5 ways to be an Angry Atheist

    2656101758_19a32e117b_m

  1. Be open and honest about your atheism -if you want to really ramp up the aggression, write a blog or even better write a book with valid criticisms of the religious (note anything on Catholics seems to rank highly)
  2. Point out certain historical inaccuracies when talking about the religiosity/ beliefs of the Founding Fathers, or  <insert country here> being a Christian Nation etc. with those pleasant believers who think that if you don’t like the idea of a far right religious theocracy you can go live in Iran (pronounced eye raan).
  3. Question where the line should be drawn with religious politicians – whether a person’s religion should inform their decisions or dictate their actions.
  4. Create or support the use of inoffensive billboards directed at isolated non-believers, suggesting politely that God may not exist.
  5. Do good deeds without reference or appeal to a higher power.

Warning: Although I fear I am stating the blindly obvious this post is very tongue in cheek.

  1. why would an atheist be angry?

    • But don't you know? Haven't you heard? All atheists are angry. I am having a not so subtle dig at the idea that really it does not matter what you do as an Atheist ( even when when those things are valid/ good) the term carries with it such heavy baggage that by default you are considered Angry. Mind you I could have swapped Angry for militant.

  3. Yep well I guess that would be one way. Perhaps if said with a middlesborough accent even better

I prefer to be perceived as an Active Atheist, but I do agree with all of your points. Your 4th point doesn't sound angry, it sounds reasonable. Great Blog!

    • Thanks for dropping by the blog. This blog post was about testing out some blogging principles ie List posting and in that regard it has been a great success increasing views 15 fold. The actual topic of the post was tongue in cheek, the 5 ways above are just about as friendly as you can be. They are five ways to be an active atheist all of them are reasonable things to do. Why did i call it 5 Ways to be an Angry Atheist? Because no matter what we do as Atheists, the label itself carries such baggage that we have been stereotyped as Angry for simply holding a contrary opinion. So in that regard my attempt at humor has been an abject failure :)

Wow, this is me to a tee. I would like to add a sixth point:

    6. Ensure the topic of religion is worked into each and every conversation you have, be it the random bloke at the pub or your mother in law.

I got it Sean. Maybe it's Aussie subtlety?

I got it! Sometimes I'm a little dimwitted, I don't quite "get" some jokes either.

Pretty nice blog you’ve got here. Thank you for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to this matter. I definitely want to read a bit more soon.

    Truly yours

Nah – none of the above, except in the eyes of religious fundamentalists. I'd say the way to be an "angry atheist" (or just an irritating one) is to do the Dawkins line – sneer at the lives/beliefs/experiences of a few billion people who aren't atheists; limit your critique of religion to a literalist reading of the Bible, and ignore the detail that an awful lot of Christians don't do that; assume that accepting/understanding the theory of evolution means someone "must" therefore become an atheist; trot out cretinous lines about the FSM or tooth fairy at every given opportunity. (All this is garnered from much reading of blogs; and no, I'm not religious.) :)

  12. Nah – none of the above, except in the eyes of religious fundamentalists.
Beg to differ. We would have to come to a definition of what an fundamentalist is. Points 3 -5 I have experienced from Christians I would consider moderate.

trot out cretinous lines about the FSM or tooth fairy at every given opportunity i'll admit it gets old, but cretinous is a stretch
