I have been bitten by the Steampunk bug(hence the neo-victorian theme). It’s not the first time mind you, so maybe its not a bug but rather a recurring condition? Which makes the news that the sequels to the Golden Compass will not be filmed due to interference from the Catholic Church a bit of a bummer (oh the irony of the Catholic Church shutting down filming of a movie that features a pseudo-Catholic authoritarian regime).
But as some small consolation I offer you this funny little animation.

Sean,
You may want to check out Alchemy of Stone (can't remember the author, but she's Russian). It's a steampunk book about A.I. that I recently purchased. It looks interesting. And of course, there's always Gibson's magestrial Difference Engine. Hope you're having a wondeful holiday.
I will add it to my list. Currently finishing up one of my Christmas presents – Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, it is good, young adult/teen (ie no swearing or rather inventive in context cussing) and an interesting pseudo historical backdrop.
Just stopped by for a peak; my first reaction and my son's who was reading on my lap was Steampunk…
Regarding the sequels to Northern Lights; maybe a deal can settled where they will be made by a foreign production company that does not fear the church. If I remember correctly, the film did much better outside my country anyway.
Who has friends with money, likes entertainment and would like to piss off the church?
Thanks for dropping in
You see I find it odd that they have canned the films due to pressure from the church, when I think that Dan browns potboilers are far more anti church.
Anti-church, but pro faith. Maybe that is the difference.
You might be on to something there. I wonder if money is also a reason. Dan Brown might just be that bit bigger/more powerful will have to dig up the takings on his movies. In the end I think it always comes down to money
