Pell fears Anti-discrimination is impacting on religious freedom

Speaking at the Australian Christian Lobby, Cardinal Pell pushed the notion that Anti-Discrimination politics is impinging on freedom of religion.  According to some commentators Pell:

…not only spoke eloquently, but convincingly of religious freedom in Australia. Pulling no punches, he unequivocally established the serious concerns over the anti-discrimination politics in Australia and how they are threatening religious freedom. He aptly represented all Christians tonight with his words and by his convictions.

All Christians apart from those gay ones of course( who are not true Christians I suppose?).  Where does this mandate for discrimination come from?  From the same place that forbid Jews to wear two types of cloth, that enabled Christians to once justify slavery, that suggests that you should stone unruly children?

This is bigotry plain and simple, Pell can dress it up in argument and promote the laughable notion that Christians freedom is threatened in this country.  But he is simple failing to move with the tide of humanity and compassion.  It would be nice if there were a modern equivalent of Wilberforce who would champion the Christian cause for gay equality.

And while on the subject of politics, the prime minister Kevin Rudd will be speaking at the ACL conference as well
