As a small child, my favourite Doctor was played by Patrick Troughton. But I did enjoy Pertwee and Baker over the years as I grew up & entered adulthood.
I have absolutely adored David Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor in recent years. And being familiar with the work of Matt Smith, I am very much looking forward to seeing the 11th Doctor. (Hmm, the older I am, the younger my preference …)
I am still scared of Daleks.
My favourite was Tom Baker. I think Pertwee was a little to reserved – though I think perhaps my choice was moulded by the Dr I got to watch the most. Tennant I think really saved the series( just finished watching him in Taking over the Asylum).
My scariest Dr Who moment would have been when the Doctor turned into a cactus. That and the Sontarans were always a bit scary.
I'm a Tom Baker fan – humour, devil-may-care attitude and rather sexy to boot. I wanted to be Leela when I grew up (although perhaps I should have aspired to being Romana).
I have fond memories of having to build a cubby house in order to watch some episodes. Daleks were always the scariest although the cactus thing was also pretty frightening. I always had a soft spot for The Ark In Space. Aside from the very impressive nylon flares it features the best use of green bubblewrap ever.
I also liked is use of Jelly babies. Must admit I had a bit of a thing for Sarah Jane Smith. I am slightly ashamed to admit it but in Primary school we had a Dr Who gang of which I was a member.
A thing for Sarah Jane Smith? Didn't we all?
Always that undercurrent of sexual tension between the Dr and his assistants. I'm sure many of us entertained fantasies of the lovely assistants as we negotiated our path through puberty.
Troughton or Tom Baker for me, too, I guess. At least for the earlier guys. I only got into Doctor Who once these recent ones got to DVD, so David Tennant is "my Doctor" as it goes. I need to see more of the earlier stuff. Why I thought I'd never like this show is beyond me. It has everything I've ever liked in Science Fiction.
Tennant is a hard act to follow, he'd be my second favourite after baker. The worst I believe was Sylvester McCoy
John Pertwee and Tom Baker are my favorites, with Genesis of the Daleks being my favorite episode (Caves of Androzani and Robots of Death were also quite good). Now if only the Brits would get off their butts and give the Americans DVDs of Blake's Seven, my life would be complete. Doesn't look like its going to happen though.
I have very early memories of Blakes Seven, for some reason it didn't get too many repeats on the National broadcaster here.
Bit the bullet and bought the first season through amazon.co.uk. I'm going to get a regionless DVD player. There's a bunch of British shows that one just can't get over here without a regionless player: Space Precinct, Hyperdrive, Blake's Seven. I wish I was part of the Commonwealth, for more reasons than one.
Careful what you wish for, we don'y have a bill of rights here, although other members of the commonwealth do
. You might be able to find software that will allow you to strip the region coding off a dvd.
You don’t need a regionless dvd player, you can in most cases make a region locked dvd player become region free just with the remote – go to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks and type in the brand and model of your dvd player for instructions on how to unlock. It is really simple mine was an LG model and all I had to do was scroll through the menu to a set point and then press 0 seven times. It is much cheaper.
Baker was good, I like Eckersley though most didn’t, however david tenant was amazing, and my girlfriend is totally besotted with him, so I think we are both a little jelous of each others affinations with him. Lol. Also leela was a babe. and I love the shirt which I bought for my girl which says “Don’t touch yourself it’ll cause a time paradox.” Classic!!!
Thanks for the DVD info. Kind of makes region coding pointless huh?
If anyone wants to see an early Tennant, i recommend taking over the asylum, wonderful show, even better if you have worked in mental health.
I will be watching it. yeah it does except people don't realise it is possible so it only does in some cases, and the people who do realise it's possible would probs have just bought a region free player anyway. The old dvd players never used to have the coding anyway. It just means cheaper dvd's for me and that I can actually by a region 2 copy of Teachers and watch it.
By the way, Sean, do you know about Farscape? It was made in Australia, shown in the U.S. It has a lot of Australian actors, but for some reason I don't think the show was ever shown in Australia. It's quite good, though you have to be patient until the second season, when it really picks up? Some truly awe-inspiring visuals that put Star Wars to shame.
Never really got into Farscape due to the fact that I lived in a more remote part of Australia and we would either not get the channel it was on or our local channel would buy it and show it at weird times.
My favourite was "Jeopardy" Shot in australia with british actors and screened as a teens show it was really quite creapy and really well done. You should check it out. Allthough I am a child of the 90's so you know my judgement may be out haha.
Jeopardy hmm never heard of it.

I think it is better than a kids show but hey.
oh and I did quite enjoy the William Hartnell episodes, he was quite well cast, and the master was creapy and the daleks made me smile when they couldn't get up the stairs, now they just fly.
Yes i can remember thinking that the Dalek design was rather daft on the battefeild prior to the levitation modification,\\.

Yes it was quite a limited evolutionary trait, I loved when the daleks were unmasked in the empire state building, brilliant. By the way I was gunna ask whether you wanted to get a group of us atheist bloggers from ANZAB together in melbourne and go out for dinner/drinks on the saturday night of the convention?
