I like Portello has joined ANZAB (Australian and New Zealand Atheist Blogroll) recently and has provided the outstanding introduction below:
“Hello all. My name is Matt and I’m an atheist.
Over at my blog “I Like Portello” I talk about religion, science, movies, music and whatever shiny thing is taking my fancy at the time. My particular concerns tend to be about the impact religion can have on politics and education, and its unwanted influence on the lives of non-believers.
I was raised in a devout evangelical Christian family, so I can quote the bible along with the best of them and I have some interesting perspectives on atheism and religion.Once upon a time I was that annoying Christian kid at high school that wouldn’t shut up about God. Not much has changed, except now I’m on the right side of the argument.”

I feel less than uplifted when I get off the train and make my way to the bus stop to see four large policemen, one a female, arrest two skinny girls and a younger male probably fourteen or fifteen years of age. It really is quite awful to see these adults with their cachet of power and authority ; guns, batons, mobile pho nes etc. patting down kids in a public place. Looking at the youngsters they could have done with a good feed. This is lay back Perth;. the city in the Golden West. I spent my young life in Glasgow one of the most socially deprived cities in the UK and I never saw anything like this. It worries me the way the police are gaining more and more power in this country which has always been a place that likes to pretend it is progressive and fair. I have not found that to be the case. One of the reasons is that the Christian Lobby is over represented in their influence with governments. While that is the case we are a long way from a democracy.
