Mercy Wikipedia Assault

2905427958_5611c4f8e0_mMercy appear to be at it again, subtly changing wikipedia entries to remove information that is not favourable towards Mercy Ministries.

A UK correspondent, familiar with the  location of  the Mercy House in the UK has traced the ip address that made the changes to within 5 miles of the Mercy House (it’s apparently in a rural area).  It’s probable that the changes were made by a mercy employee or somebody sympathetic to their operation.

John Weaver at Against Biblical Counselling,  himself a victim of Mercy like organisations noted (writing before knowledge of the ip address location) that it’s

Difficult to tell what side edited it, though I find the following passage insulting to all Mercy opponents who are not ethical relativists:

“Such controversy emerges from the different ethical standpointsemployed by observers. Those who employ virtue ethics ask questions about the purpose of any practice, whilst others use arights based, deontological or utilitarian approach. TheEvangelical Christian commitment to virtue as a basis for ethicsbrings them into direct conflict with those who believe in moral relativism, or that someone should not be discouraged from doing anything they want with their own body.”

But perhaps the writer was just trying to be fair to both sides. Who’s to know, on Wikipedia

So there is an attempt here to frame the Mercy Ministries Scandal as a clash in the culture wars two different views. It’s an attempt at appearing even handed yet, as other commenters have noted on John’s blog, speaking in code to evangelical Christians ie these Mercy opponents are moral relativists, if it feels good do it.

The thing is I have evangelical acquaintances, whose sole purpose in talking and eventually meeting me were to discuss grave concerns over Mercy’s actions and to thank me for the work that I had done.

So its not as simple as the revisionist quoted by John above, likes to portray it.  No, I oppose Mercy chiefly because

  •  they have harmed people
  • they obfuscate, mislead and lie

I am sure you can find some Biblical reference relating to virtue ethics that would  clash with Mercy’s actions.

But then Mercy likes to keep the troops thinking simple and in black and white, how this prepares them for the real world with its shades of grey I don’t know –  unless they pass into the evangelical fold after graduation… oh wait :)

I'm ashamed to say I didn't even know we HAD Mercy houses here in the UK. And unfortunately, wiki's biggest attraction is also a problem – anyone can edit it. Hopefully the problem will get sorted out soon enough.

Wikipedia is a joke when it allows these things to happen – the deletion of relevant information with references. It is vandalism, and anyone could easily go there and undo the vandalism, but then how long would the article be left alone with dishonest people on the prowl? MM has employed people to post their propaganda on the www. The girl Jamie who was on Survivor is one such person who does so. They post pro MM lies and propaganda on facebook, on propaganda blogs they have set up after they were exposed for the mistreatment of clients, they have lodged dodgy copyright claims to have youtube videos with news reports of their abuse of clients removed and have vandalised wikipedia at least once. I wonder what their job title is *laugh* It is really pathetic and it shows they know they have done wrong. These things weren't honest mistakes.
