I have google alerts set to pick up info on Alice Springs. This one popped in this morning and since I have been somewhat burnt out over the last three days I thought I might mention this story as a way of getting back into my groove.
Apparently my town has a preponderance of lesbians, 5000 in fact. In a town of around 27000 that’s… 18.5% of the population. Was this the cause of the vicious storm that ripped the town last October? Was that a warning from God to mend our wicked ways or become the Gomorrah of the Centre?
…
err no
apparently it was the result of a protest held at Pine Gap.
the town became a “haven” for lesbians after several hundred women marched on the Pine Gap intelligence base in 1983. [source]
Does this statistic ring true in my experience. Well I am not a lesbian obviously and I don’t tend to go out , but I am not oblivious to goings on around me either. I can’t say that it is that obvious. How many Lesbians do I know of ? About 10…anywho, in the words of one return visitor to Alice
Alice Springs had to be the most target rich environment I have ever seen in my life if you happen to be a baby dyke on the prowl. [source]
Always one to advertise the good things about my town – we have stunning wildlife, beautiful landscape and geology, ancient cultures and a preponderance of lesbians.

There was a documentary about that on either SBS or ABC2 recently (saw the advert, but missed the show), perhaps it's available online?
I'm sure the mass population of lesbians in your town has nothing to do with the fact that you live there… don't worry.
Hey you know me, no problems with anything rainbow tinted. Might get an influx of homophobic christians trying to save them though. Might have to keep it a secret

I think I need to move to Alice Springs.
Perth still seems to be a bit funny about lesbians. I remember going to lunch with my boyfriend and his parents, and we saw a lesbian couple holding hands and kissing ahead of us. His father, being from the country (I can only assume that was the reason for his reaction), automatically turned his head to us and was a bit freaked out. He's not religious, just a bit unfamiliar with homosexuality.
Being bisexual myself, I have to say that it's very hard to admit that in Perth, without getting exceedingly funny looks.
What is the religious community like in Alice Springs? I'm sure that would have been a reason for them to protest in outrage.
This makes me smile! "Destiny in Alice", shown on ABC1 on Jan 1 2009, is the doco referred to by OzAtheist. Lovely, genuinely lovely doco, with terrific sense of humour.
The high number of lesbians & gays here in town is one of the attractions for me (meant life was quite civilized out here and a strong arty/academic streak to the town). Would we have Bar Doppio's cafe without the hardworking queer crowd?
However, for my partner & his work colleagues (all straight, heteros), they do seem taken aback at this aspect to the town. I take great delight at exposing their homophobia by pointing out that various events around town during the year that they're thinking of attending are in aid of, or sponsored by the LGBT crowd. The askance looks I get. Lighten up fellas, they (we) are not going to bite!
As for the question in above comment re the religious community in Alice, have you counted the high number of churches in this place? For such a small town we have a lot of churches. And yet, seemingly they do co-exist peacefully with the rest of the community. The Alice never fails to fascinate me with its social demographics and culture mix.
I too like the cosmopolitan feel that having a strong LGBT presence seems to evoke. I do find the service at Bar Doppios a bit slow though. My preference is the Daily grind, though the atmosphere is a bit lacking.
I have had some interesting newspaper stoushes with the Local lutheran pastor and had to comment when they objected to a porn star visiting Alice but generally its pretty good. I wear my atheist jumper around town without harassment:D
Since the change of ownership/management at Bar Dop's it's not been up to par. Great shame but still has good coffee. My only beef with Daily Grind is that it's stuck indoors, inside a non-descript shopping mall. Sad. But again, great coffee. They too have suffered some teething pain with their change of ownership.
I try to avoid the church crowd with exception of (a) the truly wonderful & dedicated Sisters of Charity who you occasionally see in town doing the grocery shop, & (b) every 6 months or so the JWs make the mistake of knocking on my door. I do try to be polite, was known for it in fact, but as I get closer to 50 I find my tolerance retreating.
I do find the new Daily Grind a bit stark. I may have to go down to Bar dops and blog to use up my credit on the wireless. That's the funnny thing about cofee shops here is that they don't seem to be set up for laptop users=/
I work with the Salvo's who appear rather understated, which is at odds with some rather militant salvo's I have witnessed online. I appeared semi naked to the JW last visit they don't seem to have returned, can't figure out why:D
