Tony Abbot the moral courage of politicians

Sorry just barfed up my lunch after reading the headlines regarding Tony Abbot’s views on the Medal of Freedom.

Has Tony realised that he no longer has to bury his honker between John Howard’s cheeks and lick that cheesy rosebud …sorry channeling Sean Bedlam.

On to the story brought to you by the Australian:

OPPOSITION frontbencher Tony Abbott has sparked outrage by comparing John Howard’s US Presidential Medal of Freedom with Trooper Mark Donaldson’s Victoria Cross.

Mr Abbott suggests moral courage is possibly a higher virtue than physical courage in comments published in the Weekend Australian today.

The remarks have outraged military veterans who have inundated the office of Veterans Affairs Minister Allan Griffin with complaints.

Mr Griffin labelled Mr Abbott’s comments offensive and degrading and called on Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull to ensure the former Howard Government minister apologises.

Yes it’s so much more courageous standing up for government policy, I have seen the no man’s land that is the parliamentary chamber, where  verbal shots can slice open a man or women’s pride.  Being shot at by several people determined to kill you just doesn’t compare.

Seriously, most  modern politicians play the popularity game.  What courage is there in consulting the polls or keeping the party line.

Tony Abbot has shown once again how out of touch he is with reality or public sentiment.  Now the digger who got the VC doesn’t see himself as a hero.  Perhaps Abbott could learn a little about courage and humility from this man.
