December 16th after having blogged for two years straight and generating 500 + posts, google bots classified my old blog as Spam, locked it down and forced me to submit a request to have a human review and unlock it. I could still post but I was required to enter word verificartion everytime.
That would have been fine but it interfered with my scheduling and using third partyblogging software. Google informed I was to wait 48 hrs and the blog would be reviewed and unlocked.
It’s still locked now, a month later.
That my blog could be affected so easily, combined with numerous other reports from bloggers that have suffered the same fate (false categorisation as spam and inaction by google) prompted me to look at self hosting via wordpress.
And the rest as they say is history. I moved and now it’s time for a State of the Blog report:
How am I finding wordpress?
I really like wordpress 2.7. One thing that sold me was the auto-upgrade feature. Navigating around the interface is easy, it looks a little plain but as yet I haven’t hit anything problems where I have thought “damn I used to be able to do that on blogger”. I did go all out and buy a professionally developed theme and that has been supurb and fun to muck around with and configure.
How has my blogging been affected?
I no longer use live writer as blogging software. I find that the wordpress publishing function meets my needs quite well. Iam probably blogging a little more than I used to but that is because I am getting more feedback in both comments and visits.
The Stats
Visits
nautblog.blogspot.com (17/11/08 to 17/12/08) = 1730
seantheblogonaut.com (17/12/09 to 17/01/09) = 3731
Was the move worth it?
I think so. Cetainly visitor numbers are up. Overall it cost me about $300 aud to get the site where it is now. Money well spent? My wife may disagree.
I don’t expect to make any money out of it but it’s what I enjoy doing and as a hobby goes $300 ain’t that much.
I like the new digs. How about you?

Definitely a good move.
I do worry what will happen if MySpace or Facebook decide that my social network is contrary to their plans for world domination.
I know you’ve already got a host now, but can I really recommend nearlyfreespeech.net. It’s cheap, there are no contracts, it’s pay-as-you-go microbilling from a credit balance, they are really good on censorship (they avoid it as far as legally possible), and they give you a lot of control over your site. It’s not for beginners though. I love them very much so far.
I like it. I suppose I may need to do the same one of these days. I think I might enjoy learning a new platform, but I'm not especially thrilled with having to pay for something that is now free.
Wait until google gets you vjack
I know others this has happened to as well. Google is extremely talented in the fine art of holding your blog (and sometimes gmail) hostage.
Haven't had any issues with gmail so far, but yes the blog thing affect thousands or so I hear
Well, my proposal still stands if you care. Also I think 300$ is too much for a blog. You can basically get similar results with ~100 as well. Also, don't forget that this cost is for the hosting package which gives you much more than simply a blog
Glad to see you enjoy it Sean.Btw, what put your price to 300$? That seems a bit steep from my experience
db0 it was 150 aud which was discounted thanks to your referral. It was the exchange rate that killed me – shhould have moved a couple of months ago
the extra 150 was for a theme and a years support – not necessary and on reflection with a little more patience on my part I could have worked out what I needed to know. But then I was also purchasing wordpress help for my wife's new business
Oh and a huge thankyou to you db0 – can't sing your praises enough
Blogger shall never turn on me, as it knows that I possess the magic that is horrible SEO tactics. So…where in the hell is my Tiffany Day?
Maybe I should ask Tiffany to do a guest blog? Then people searching for her would actually find her here
I actually have no clue who tiffany day is, I just felt like picking the oddball choice. As for the switch though, at least now all those young doe eyed blog readers won't look at your blog and have a seizure.
Okay the last blog was a flare collection
Yo Everybody!
All of the recent stories of the downfall of the economy and loss of jobs has been driving most americans nuts!
I started searching online for a way to get help and discovered that the government gives free grants.
What I would like to know is…. does anyone know what website I can find free online grant applications at?
Thank You!
