British setting up a surveillance state?

Australian IT new reports that :

THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant.

Understanibly Civil liberty advocates are extremely worried with this turn of events. The plan seems to have its genesis in laws passed in the European Union. Where under the Brussels edict:

…police across the EU have been given the green light to expand the implementation of a rarely used power involving warrant-less intrusive surveillance of private property. The strategy will allow French, German and other EU forces to ask British officers to hack into someone’s UK computer and pass over any material gleaned.

The plan removes judicial oversight, instead senior police will have the authority to determine weather or not such searches are required. Apparently this sort of intrusion is warranted to catch paedophiles, fraudsters, criminals and terrorists.

If that is indeed the case surely it would be better to develop some sort of streamlined system with judicial oversight? Australia’s first major test of the anti terror laws ended in complete embarrassment for the Federal Police and the government, lets wait and see how this turns out. Why must we constantly give away our rights just for expediency and conveniences sake

In the meantime let’s hope Senator Conroy doesn’t get any ideas?
