I am not saying its anywhere like the states but when talking with a certain famous christian singer regarding some good work I had done, they said that they believed that god was using me to do good work.

So its not so much that atheists are immoral but they can be god's instument:)

What a sheltered existence I lead, in some ways, at least.

Although perhaps not as sheltered as those who can conceive of no reason to show kindness and goodwill to one's fellow man other than supernatural coercion.

You'd be surprised. I still come across Christians that are a little shocked that I am an atheist. They like to view me as an instrument of god when doing god works, because to them it is impossible for me to be a good person without god – it does not compute

I had certainly heard of that argument. I didn't think that anyone but the most foaming-at-the-mouth demagogue would actually take it seriously.
