In what must surely be yet another blow to Conroy, the Greens and the Liberals will be opposing the rediculous mandatory filtering scheme. The Greens are concerned:
…that there’s going to be a unnecessary clamp down on the internet and it has to be watched – Sen. Bob Brown [source]
Sen. Ludlum has also been working closely with community groups that oppose the filter.
ZDNet Australia reports on Nick Minchin’s criticism of both the National Broadband Network and Labour’s Mandatory filering plans, specifically that :
“Labor’s plan to implement a mandatory internet filter at ISP level has been roundly attacked with valid concerns raised about its likely effectiveness, the adverse impact it would have on internet speeds and performance and also the precise nature of the content the Government plans to filter,”
…There is no technical substitute for appropriate adult supervision when it comes to keeping our children safe online and most parents and teachers take that responsibility very seriously and any suggestions to the contrary are patronising and offensive.”
….that Conroy’s policy was causing Australia embarrassment internationally, giving it a reputation as a repressive regime.
So good news, for the moment at least.
