Let us entertain the notion that the ISP filter is
a) 100% effective in protecting children from viewing childpron on the Internet
b) Has no noticeable affect on Internet performance
c) That we have a transparent government body in charge of censorship/filtering
I know but, stop laughing for a minute, this is a thought experiment.
Would I or you support it?
No. I wouldn’t
Why? Because:
a) Children are in little or no danger of viewing childpron in Australia due the nature of its distribution,-through chat rooms and peer to peer (un-filterable)
b) Producers and consumers of childpron will be largely un-effected, as filtering will have no effect on supply or demand
c) The victims of this “industry”- the girls and boys forced to partake in this filth will receive no help, not a jot of the 40 million will prevent their abuse.
Oh our children will never have to see these vile sites. Our children will be safe from viewing childpron(they are practically now) but the victims, the untold thousands, we don’t need to worry about them – the real problem, let’s bury it.
She’ll be right jack at least it’s not my kids.
They will however still be subject to:
- increasing sexualisation via the mainstream media
- the very real threat of perpetrators close to home (perhaps in it)
- a society that increasingly abrogates personal accountability in favour of fix-alls from government.
No sadly, this filtering has never been about the children. Anybody concerned for the welfare of children can not in my opinion support mandatory filtering – it is a bait and switch of epic proportions.
Now if we want to talk legal porn, online access to it and censorship let’s have that conversation.
