Insider response to Mercy Ministries scandal

The Cross of the Shepherd in Green PasturesImage by dcfdelacruz via Flickr

This is more an observational post than anything, but it seems to me that the “insider” response to the Mercy Ministry scandal in Australia has been to

  1. cry Christian persecution
  2. claim that they were in the home or knew someone in the home and they weren’t abused, so it didn’t happen

Now I can understand the response in point one. Everyone likes to play the victim and to be the underdog.

When evangelical Christianity comes under the media microscope, however, it’s usually because something untoward has been happening ie Pastor Mike and the Mercy Scandal, Hillsong’s misappropriation of funds for Aboriginal welfare – hardly persecution.

The media sensationalises the facts but they don’t make up the stories.

The response in point 2 is more concerning.

It didn’t happen to me or my friends, therefore it didn’t happen.

What concerns me here is the unquestioning loyalty, that Mercy can do no wrong – which to me is indicative of a brainwashed cult following.

We have seen similar from Catholic followers regarding the sexual abuse claims made against that church. It has literally taken years to break down the stigma, the propaganda that protected those priests.

Nancy Alcorn plays a good game, apologising sincerely to the victims of abuse when she has to(confronted by angry women who might take legal action against her).  But she makes sure she does this in private, likewise the perpetrators of the abuse are given their marching orders and the home closed down due to “resource issues”.

It seems that Nancy has still  not relayed the details of her apology to the graduates, nor the women within the Mercy homes.  Is this because:

  1. She wants to shield them from the horrors of reality
  2. She’s been to busy helping her dogs start a facebook page
  3. She realises what the effect on funding would be and needs the cash
  4. Does not care about the victims of abuse, does not want to root out any possible abuse, because she does not see it as such.

Come on Nancy, do the right thing, do what Jesus would do?  Be open and honest.  You could even do it over your new video blog

Here I’ll help:

  • Announce a review of the program
  • Purge the “Restoring the Foundations” doctrine from the organisation
  • Institute an exit interview policy

Oh and while you are at it take some advice from old bill

“And this above all unto thine own self be true ”

  • Unmarried at 50 ?and evangelical christian
  • loves dogs
  • ex girl juvie gym supervisor
  • works in an organisation where she has access to young girls
  • is worshiped the world over by young women
  • runs a covert ex-gay program

As the American’s say

you do the math

    Hey Sean,
Good post. I just ordered the RTF stuff myself to do research on what Alcorn is doing. I’m hoping to become more active in the anti-Mercy cause, if I can. You know she was on Joyce Meir recently, right?

    Take care,
    John

There’s where you can find Joyce’s and Nancy’s little heart-to-heart. Or at least the propaganda message about Mercy. It’s unclear from what I’ve seen so far whether alcorn herself gets interviewed. Oh, and they claim that Mercy girls get help from “trained professionals”

A girl is ready to graduate when she has a “solid after-care program”. Or when she gets caught smoking a cigarette.

Alcorn: “But we just had 400 girls do an indepdent anonymous study and 93% of the girls said they had an improvement through going through the program”

Sean I hope you don’t mind my post here but you must be close to possummomma to be her mod. I really want to do something for P3. Being in bed for two weeks when it’s also your birthday is hell. I want to help her but I don’t know how we can do this to get the word out and keep her address private. Do you think we should ask about her setting up a wishlist for P3?
Of course if there’s no interest in getting it together from an atheism family perspective we’ll let it play out. What do you think?

Funny the first report of that Survey, the number was 300 hundred surveyed. It was conducted by a Christian firm, of Mercy Graduates, and to date the questions and results have not been released publically. Frankly i am surprised the result is not 100%.

Maybe I need to write a post :)

Remember MM can’t get their numbers right or stick to their own lies.

It reminds me of Peter Irvine’s false claims of numbers on Today Tonight and the other media he did, claiming only 5% don’t ‘succeed’ at Mercy Ministries in Australia.

Frankly, I wouldn’t trust the 300 figure or the 400 figure and there’s no way I’m believing the 93% LOL. I wonder why the girls I know from Mercy Ministries of America who decided to leave or were forced to leave didn’t receive any so-called survey!

These people from Mercy Ministries lie like it’s going out of fashion.

Or, as we Americans say, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”. Or, “if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck”.

    Rosie,

Something is underway. Berle is in the States and will be co-ordinating something.

    Cheers

    John,

I went back and checked the Mercy site and it looks like they have updated their statistics page. I will be doing a post criticising the survey. Note it does not identify who did the suvery.

Sean, before they take it down, you should listen to the audio between Nancy and the guy in Nashville (on the mErcy website)

    http://www.mercyministries.org/LearnMore/VideoAudio.aspx

Nancy admits that they deal with sexual “identity” issues at Mercy.

    Also, check out:

    http://www.mercyministries.org/MercyVolunteerInvitedtotheWhiteHouse.aspx

to see Nancy shaking hands with George Bush. Wow, could you imagine what the world would be like if George had married Nancy. Australia and the U.S. would probably be at war right now!

We don’t have to imagine…Sarah Palin is already in the race.

RE the first comment, you may not be aware that MM no longer uses RTF?

  • Sean the Blogonaut F.C.D.

    Anonymous,

Please change the name you sign in under or leave a name at the end of your post like john does as per comments policy.

Now as to the RTF model:

How did you come by this info?
When did they stop using it?
Is this Australia or the US?
What have they replaced it with?

They hardly ever refer to RTF outside of Mercy so I am assuming you have worked with them or been a client. If you want to send some info to me via email feel free to do so.

The fired theeir exorcist from their Queensland home this year so I presume it was being used until that time.
