Triskaidekatheism

images AV has nominated me for Nullifidian’s Atheist Thirteen meme.  I generally don’t have the time for memes but I am feeling generous today.

Q1. How would you define “atheism”?
Atheism is a lack of belief in a god or gods.

There tends to be some other baggage lumped in the boot with Atheism but this is the simplest.

Q2. Was your upbringing religious? If so, what tradition?
I was raised Catholic, attended catholic primary and junior high.  My senior years were at a state institution – no not prison or a mental facility.  University years were at the now ironically named Charles Darwin University

Q3. How would you describe “Intelligent Design”, using only one word?
Propaganda

Q4. What scientific endeavour really excites you?

Genetic Engineering though that is excitement mixed with concern.

Q5. If you could change one thing about the “atheist community”, what would it be and why?
Get it well organised and funded

Q6. If your child came up to you and said “I’m joining the clergy”, what would be your first response?
I don’t plan to have children.  But if I did I train them to think critically and form their own opinions.  I wouldn’t be happy but then its not about my happiness is it.

Q7. What’s your favourite theistic argument, and how do you usually refute it?

Don’t have a favourite, they become boring after awhile.  If pushed it’s probably Pascal’s wager.

Refute – I like to try different approaches depending on the person.  The absurdity of trying to hide your thoughts from a supposedly omniscient being.  Or the which gods are we talking about angle.

Q8. What’s your most “controversial” (as far as general attitudes amongst other atheists goes) viewpoint?

Don’t tend to have one, a controversial viewpoint.  Perhaps Carlton being the best AFL team on the planet.

Q9. Of the “Four Horsemen” (Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens and Harris) who is your favourite, and why?

Hitchens – Because he is articulate and cutting, and that’s when he’s half tanked.

Q10. If you could convince just one theistic person to abandon their beliefs, who would it be?
My sister, but then she’s Deistic so I am halfway there :)

*LOL* (literally) I don’t usually bother describing myself as “deist” because most people don’t know what that means. I’m glad to see you do!

  5. AV says:

    Thanks, Sean.

Out of curiosity, why is Charles Darwin University ironically named?

  6. Sean the Blogonaut F.C.D. says:

    AV,

My second year they ripped the guts out of the humanities, no philosophy, curtailed english program. It became in my opinion a glorified TAFE it was then called NTU.

They Charles Darwin title was at odds with my perception of what it became. They were I think aiming a bit too high.

    in good company,

I think a great many cultural christians are deists, especially when you point out the differences between what their church promotes and what they personaly believe.
