I recently bought a book called The Family by Jeff Sharlet. The might be a review forthcoming – but that would require me reading it – it’s just looking nice on my shelf at the moment.
From Wikipedia:
The Family (also known as The Fellowship, The Fellowship Foundation, and The International Foundation) is the name of a designedly informal U.S. organization that claims to be centered around the life and teachings of Jesus. The group, without any formal membership, has relationships that span from poor communities in developing countries to prominent members of the United States Congress. It is best known for its role in organizing the annual National Prayer Breakfast, at which the President of the United States customarily makes an address. Douglas Coe has led the group since 1966.[1][2] It has 20,000 members, directed by 350 leaders. [2]
Jeff was interviewed on Late Night Live by Australia’s Favourite Atheist – Phillip Adams
Jeff Sharlet is the Editor of the The Revealer: A Daily Review of Religion and the Press
Many thanks to Ruth at Book City for the tip off on the Radio National Interview

Okay, I know this is a little off-topic, but Sean I’m not sure if you’ve seen this…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wduwH3olD98&NR=1
OMG…Nancy is such an ignorant redneck hick and if her BS is not vile enough, the brainwashed mentality of the girls is just sickening. The campaign actually ADRESSES the fact (without actually saying it) that they provide NO psychiatric help because in the real world doctors just give the girls pills (they’d just throw me in a psych ward…”) but with God’s love and the holy spirit they can overcome their problems at Mercy…with what? Bible studies?! Exorcisms to “cast out” the demons inside of those girls? Remember, Mercy views all science and psychiatry suspiciously and does all it can to undermine it. They truly do not care about the girls, so much as turning them into a network of dependent Christians who will USE Hillsong and its affiliated churches as a sefety net into which they provide future monetary donations! Nancy’s mentality is truly warped if she thinks she’s helping these girls.
Psychiatry involves a combination of medication AND therapy, but apparently Christian principles are the one-size fits all approach to everything! I can’t believe how disingenuous the video is…it’s total spin and outright propaganda. Nancy is SUVBERTING science to push her bullshit and the girls don’t know any better!! This is outrageous!!!
when I read the title of your post I kept singing ‘Helter Skelter’
but no its not about that – looks like an interesting book but maybe a bit conspiracy theory-ish and does it mention the illuminati by any chance or take a different tack.
anonymous- totally agree with you there- as a psych professional- if only it were that easy both for me and for my clients to just ‘take a pill’ forget the years I spend with some girls doing psychotherapy to try and help them help themselves
Anon,
Thanks for the clip I am sure i’ll enjoy it.
PD,
Not conspiracy theorish at all. The author was actually invited to spend time with the group.
^^The author spent quite a bit of time at one of their houses. It’s not conspiracy theory stuff (AFAIK, it’s more like an *actual* conspiracy). talk2action.org has lots of stuff about it.
thanks
I may very well read it then
I’ve read it. Jeff Sharlet is a great journalist, it was his Rolling Stone article on the sexual-purity movement that inspired me to start blogging the cheesy anti-masturbation self-help book “Every Man’s Battle”.
