Freethought Books Project

This is a little shout out for the Freethought books project run by Leslie Zukor.  The organisation supplies Freethought books to prison inmates.  I think it is a great idea. Leslie is the only person in the whole of the United States doing this.

Brilliant! with all the problems we have in the UK currently with so-called voluntary (i.e ‘faith based’ ) groups taking over social services, probation etc this is a good idea to have here too- don’t suppose you happen to know if there is one in the uk?

SB, Pretty cool. Believe it or not, as consertive as a Christian that I am, I’m all about free thought. If you’ve never read Steven Hawkings “Brief History of Time”, I highly recommend it. “Dumbs down” the Big Bang theory (no equations or math!)…I think it was actually geared toward the thought that you can believe in creation and that you can believe in the big bang and God at the same time. Personally, I believe in both…who am I to put a timeline on how long it took God to create the universe. A day to God might be millions of years to him…his seven days might just have been 4.9billion years. My dad was a devout Christian man and a physisist (almost contradictory!) so that’s how I know about Hawkings and his theories. BTW, I’ve been to a few prisions (but I got to leave!) with a group I’m in. Those folks need all the help they can get and positive attention. My trips might have been about believing in a Higher Power but anything to help them…spirit of self will and choice. Now, in the spirit of honesty (and I know you’ll say goes against the 10 Commandments), rapest and child molesters and cold blooded killers (Jeffery Dahmer types), terminate them. If some one were to intentionally hurt MM, Lulibell or Bubba, all bets are off and the gloves come off….know what I mean? Do you have children, nieces/nephews, sisters, bros? If so you will know what I mean but of course, you may very well be more forgiving than I. Be good to yourself–HM

    Charles,

Have not had a chance to read a brief history of time yet, so I can’t comment. There are however many people you can reconcile both their Christian beliefs with science. Indeed this is how I used to view things.

It’s perfectly workable as evidenced by Francis Collins a man who is one of the greatest geneticists of our time and a fundamentalist christian and obviously your father.

This is all due to the Reformation and the reinterpretation of the Christian canon in the light of science.

My only problem is a philosophical one here. I can no longer make the jump.

We have current scientific theory ie the big bang and before that the unknown.

Some people like to call that unknown God. A God of the gaps arguement if you like.

I just prefer to call it the unknown. It will probably remain so long after I am wormfood :)

I have been increasing my undersatnding of early christian history, and the construction of the Bible, the old testament. The harder you look the more you see that a) Its not divinely inspired b)Its heavily reconstructed and reinterpreted and will continue to be so.

There is no evidence for me that points to a God of any description, that is not a creation of man.

But if you can make that jump from Big Bang to God, good luck to you.

On prisons, yes aside from psychopaths and sociopaths, you tend to see people who have made wrong choices, or who have not been in situations where they were given the tools to make the right ones.

Admittedly I would find it hard not to fly into a murderous rage if one of my family were harmed – I am human :)

    Enjoy you time at home.
