I have finished the “His Dark Materials” trilogy by Phillip Pullman. As I turned the final page of the Amber Spyglass, I am not ashamed to say, I cried.
Apart from the end of the Lord of the Rings(books) there has never been a series or characters or story that have effected my so emotionally.
That members of the Catholic League, or any Christian can read the story and not be effected on a human level – has me stumped.
Yes there is a strong undercurrent of anti-theism in the last book, but putting that aside the story and the characters tear at your heart.

Ok, that’s it. I’m off to find these books I’ve heard so much about.
The even have separate covers for the grown ups
yes- I loved these books for ages- ever since my son put me onto them
I am so sad I even have the different covers
I also cried
Thanks for this review and recommendation. It’s in my barnesandnoble.com wish list. I’ll be buying it within the week.
PD,
Welcome back. I see you have been busy with the new job. I actually do prefer the faux-woodcut covers, but had to read the story and couldn’t wait
Summer,
Its a really good read.
Just like my mom (Psychodiva) I cried when I read the last book. All the way through the last couple of chapters. Anyone who overlooks the sheer brilliance of the story, to complain about the anti-theist undertones is missing the point entirely. I look forward to seeing the film, when I get the chance, I hope it lives up to the books.
Hannah,
Thanks for dropping by. I have demanded that the entire family watch it on boxing day. My wife rolled her eyes but my sister is keen. I am going in with no expectations, so as not to be disappointed, but it looks good.
I don’t want spoiled but I came accross yoru blog and just had to comment and let you know that I just finished book one of His Dark Materials and plan to crack open The Subtle Knife tonight. I was sooo freaking sad when I realized what Lord Asriel was gonna do with Roger… I am actually very excited for the film to.
As for crying at the end of a book, I cried like a baby at the end of Harry Potter (most specifically the chapter called “The Prince’s Tale”).
OH MY GOD! I’m getting chocked up just thinking about it! ::sniffle::
Hi Ryan,
I won’t say a thing about the ending. Just have some tissues handy
