Book Recommendations

After leaving my previous workplace, my colleagues pitched in and purchased me a $200 gift voucher for a local boostore. So with money to burn I am sending out a request to my readers for their suggestions. I am calling for Atheist/Atheism related books first up:

I already have:

Atheism
_________
The God Delusion
The End of Faith
Letter to a Christian Nation
The Atheist Universe
Infidel

Scientific
_______
The Selfish Gene
The Blind Watchmaker

I am considering:

A Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan

I already have on order:

Why I am not a Christian by Betrand Russell

Is there anything that you would say, get this first Sean!! to ?

WOW!!!! What an amazing gift! What a tribute to how much you will be missed by your former co-workers!

    I would recommend…. sorry that’s not the correct format…

I would say…”Get this first Sean…” to the Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes.

I would love to hear what you thought of this book and the author’s conclusions. This was the pivotal book in my becoming an atheist.

  2. Fiery Ewok says:

    Another idea… ehem.

“Get this first Sean Objectivism: the Philosophy of Ayn Rand by Leonard Peikoff”

  3. Poodles Rule says:

In the science category I would recommend Moral Minds: How Nature Designed our Universal Sense of Right and Wrong by Marc Hauser.

  4. Russ says:

    Sean,

Based on the categories “Atheism” and “Scientific,” a few titles come to mind for your consideration:

“Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon” by Daniel Dennett. This relates well to both science and atheism since it is a call for and justification of the scientific investigation of religion.

Another title along those mixed atheism and science lines is “God: The Failed Hypothesis. How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist” by Victor Stenger. In it Stenger uses the idea that if something acts in the material universe, its actions can be measured by science.

“God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything” by Christopher Hitchens. In it Hitchens accounts for why from the religiously motivated strife he has personally witnessed during his extensive travels, and from his research for his writings, he does see that god is not great and religion does poison everything.

    Enjoy!

Many thanks to you all for replying so quickly. I had scoured Amamzon reviews, the choice was just two much though. To have people I respect and converse with point me in a direction has helped me focus.

Pleas excuse two should be too. Been working with figures all day
