News.com.au reports on John Howards tacit support for a Fundamentalist Christian Group – here .
Which begs the question does the Prime minister have the right to publicly express himself via his or her religion?
I think the prime minister, anyone, should have the right to freely express their religion or lack thereof without fear of persecution.
Is that what Howard is doing in this case? Is it inappropriate for the Prime Minister to appear to be favouring a Fundamentalist group?
John Howard recording a speech on “Australian Values” (hardly his area of expertise) to be disseminated through Catch the Fire ministries (CTFM) event goes beyond expressing his religion to supporting extremist/fundamentalist action and/or thought. It implies, rightly or wrongly that the effective head of our country has views similar to those expressed by Catch the Fire.
Personally it makes me uncomfortable as the issue edges closer to the insufficient separation of Church and State.
The “flock” of CTFM will come away from the situation firm in the knowledge that both God and the PM are behind them, further legitimating their actions.
